FBLA gains victories at Section Conference

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competed in the Southern Section Leadership Conference at Valencia HS on Saturday, Feb. 11.
At the conference, FBLA competed against twenty-one other schools in the Southern Section, including Troy and Rowland HS, and placed fifth overall for sweepstakes. The team took home nineteen awards, and twelve members are advancing to the California State Leadership Conference.
Co-adviser Scot Hansen is pleased with the overall results and encourages members to continue working hard.
“It was great to see everyone compete, [beat] a lot of really good schools and get so many awards,” Hansen said. “Now, members [moving on to state] should take a look at the [judges’] evaluations to make necessary [improvements].”
In the week leading up to Saturday, members received practice tests and attended a study session to work on topics ranging from Healthcare Administration to Personal Finance.
Co-president junior Melanie Wu placed second in Public Speaking and believes that she can do more to improve her speech.
“I felt confident about my delivery, because I really immersed myself into my speech and engaged the judges,” Wu said. “As I advance to state, I plan on adding statistics and a [catchier] theme.”
Senior Carrie Zhao attributes her first place victory in Sales Presentation to her oratory experience.
“I [was able] to enhance my public speaking skills [during my time as] the previous California State Vice-President,” Zhao said. “[Even so], I was [still] shocked when I won, [because there were] over fifty other competitors.”
FBLA’s next event is the State Leadership Conference from Apr. 12 to 14.
