Journalism and Yearbook participated in Eastern Los Angeles Journalism Education Association (ELAJEA) Write-offs at Schurr HS on Saturday, Mar. 3.
During the competition, members from both organizations competed in their respective sections, including photography, layouting, copy writing and various article writing categories. Ultimately, Wilson took home 5th place Newspaper Sweepstakes, 1st place Yearbook Sweepstakes and 4th place Super Sweepstakes.
Yearbook staffer junior Jeffrey Jew says that the competition ended in success, because it allowed members to display their expertise.
“The event [showed] how much [we have] progressed as staffers and editors and [allowed us to] apply our skills to a competitive [environment],” Jew said.
In order to prepare, Paw Prints Weekly and Prowler staff members practiced in class in the days leading up to the competition.
According to Yearbook staffer junior Gabrielle Lin, who placed 10th in News Photography, practicing before the competition did not help while competing.
“Two days before the competition, I went around the school and looked for [objects] to take pictures, but [it] was not effective, because [it did not match a competition setting],” said Lin.
However, Paw Prints Weekly Editor-in-Chief Eva Chang says the competition proved to be worthwhile, because it provided participants an opportunity to learn.
“[ELAJEA] was a good experience for [participants, because] competing is not easy,” Chang said. “They were exposed to journalism [in a real life scenario], as they were [competing] against other schools [in a timed situation].”
Both publications will compete at the Southern California Journalism Education Association (SCJEA) Write-Offs on Mar. 17.
