On Saturday, Mar. 17, track participated in an invitational against sixteen other teams at Covina HS. Over 50 Wilson members qualified in their respective events.
According to coach Mike Gomez, the team performed well and the intense competition did not crack the team’s spirit.
“Our kids did great against [all of the] tough schools. By the way [our athletes] stretched and warmed up beforehand, I could tell that they were determined, and their teamwork was great as well. Overall, our team worked very hard and I am proud of them.”
Jumps Captain Cherise Ching (11) received 8th place with 14 feet and 11 inches in long jump, which almost beat her personal record. In her triple jump, Ching received third place with 32 feet flat.
Ching viewed the results from this invitational as a motivation to push herself harder at the upcoming meet against Rowland HS.
“I was a little disappointed with my triple jump and I hope to jump a couple more inches for the Rowland meet. Since Rowland is one of our biggest competitors, I hope our team can place in all levels for jumps,” Ching said.
Distance runner Daniela de la Torre (11) believes that the invitational allowed for growth and adjustment to her running styles.
“The meet allowed me to discover some tactics to better my running style,” de la Torre said. “Before this, I did not know my running form was wrong. After competing, and along with my coach’s help, I realized the mistakes to change for the next competition.”
Track’s next invitational will be at Chino HS on March 24.
