After two years, Ariana Grande is pickin’ it up with her newest single, “No Tears Left to Cry.”
Although her release was unexpected, she managed to top the charts with her groovy and synth-full song.
Initially, the song began on a melancholy note. Paired with the title, many fans anticipated an angsty one. However, things took a turn with Ariana repeating “I’m pickin’ it up.”
The rest of the song is full of a minimalistic beats, synthy pianos and oddly, but also appreciated, what seems to be a triangle. All these elements craft a funky beat that is very spontaneous and quirky.
Unfortunately, the lyrics are drowned by the background music; however, once you get to know the lyrics, they are very optimistic. Phrases like “Ain’t got no tears left to cry, so I’m pickin’ it up, I’m lovin’, I’m livin’…”, and “Comin’ out, even when it’s rainin’ down, can’t stop now…” both promote persevering happiness no matter how tragic the situation may be. This ties in with her reason for her hiatus in the first place: the Manchester incident.
After the Manchester bombing last year, Ariana decided to host One Love Manchester in tribute to those who had died and to raise money for the Love Manchester Emergency Fund. The concert had various artists in support for both Ariana and the victims of the bombing.
Her manager, Scooter Braun, revealed that Ariana was hesitant about singing again, but she decided to resume her career as a singer because of all the support she received.
The song has garnered mixed opinions, with some people believing that the song was all over the place to people who think the song was interesting and fun. It is agreed upon that the song is a mishmash of various genres and that “No Tears Left to Cry” is building up hype for her newest album of which no details have been released about yet. After Ariana’s sensational Dangerous Woman album, many fans expect the tracklist to be full of various hits with diverse genres and artists to collab with.
All in all, it is safe to say that after what happened in Manchester, everyone is thrilled to see Ariana back and better than ever.
