On Monday, Aug. 26, boys’ water polo defeated West Covina HS with a final score of 28-2.

The victory signified  the beginning of the team’s preseason game set and offered players an opportunity to put their hard work to use and test the waters.

Over the summer, new and returning players utilized their days to practice drills and build upon team chemistry.

According to captain Ryan Lien (12), the match offered the team insight on ways to refine their performance.

“The game [served] as a confidence booster for our [players] and relieved the pressure of losing our first home game,” Lien said. “It also allowed us to see our [areas of improvement] such as our offense, [which] is what we struggle with against [other] teams.”

Despite their success, field player Edmond Chu (11)  believes the team can improve on their cohesiveness and performance.

“[Several] players do not attend practice which affects our team’s playing abilities,” Chu said. “If players [put] more effort into getting to know our team and how each we play, it will [surely] help us in the future.”

Moving forward, player Ethan Brown (11) plans to utilize his experience to improve his performance.

“For future games, I am going to work on my assertiveness and [being] more aware of what to do [throughout] the game,” Brown said. “My goal is to become a more confident and thoughtful player by putting more effort into understanding different plays.”

Boys’ water polo will face Baldwin Park HS at home on Tuesday, Sep. 3.
